Richmond Nursery Strawberry Farm.
The Richmond Nursery has been growing strawberries even before the nursery was officially a business. The first strawberry plantation was put in the ground in 1959. Nobody believed strawberries could be grown in Ottawa.
Lots of time has passed since the original plantation located in Richmond at the end of Ottawa Street. The field was moved three times and is now located at the corner of Richmond Road and Fallowfield Road.
Growing practices have also changed during through the years and we're always trying to improve our plantation. In the past few years we've worked very hard to reduce the use of pesticides considerably and also increase the overall health of the plants. This allows us to produce bigger and better berries in less space allowing us to better control our crops.
Our fields are primarily pick-your-own, though we have pre-picked berries available during the season. You can't get Richmond Nursery Strawberries anywhere other than our fields, so don't be fooled.
Each year the strawberry season can change depending on the weather. The system typically runs from June 23rd to July 23rd. Always call before coming since weather conditions can change how quickly our berries ripen.
In 2006 we introduced a new product at our strawberry farm and sold everbearing strawberry plants right at the field. It was such a success, we plan to add a complete host of small fruit plants like raspberries, blueberries, rhubarb, asparagus, currents, and even grapes.
